Runs your K2 sites on Joomla 6

Don't rebuild.
Upgrade.

Chogori takes a Joomla 3 site built on the K2 content engine and brings it to Joomla 6 — content, extra fields, galleries, template overrides, modules, and URLs intact. The site your client already loves, on a platform with a future.

The problem

Your site didn't break. Its ground did.

K2 made Joomla sites great for a decade — extra fields, galleries, author pages, clean templates. But K2 was never updated for Joomla 4, 5, or 6. So tens of thousands of sites sit on Joomla 3: unsupported since 2023, tied to ageing PHP, one hosting upgrade away from a white screen.

The usual advice? "Just migrate your content to core articles." But a site is not just content. It's custom templates and overrides, K2 modules and plugins, extensions built on K2's data, years of custom code — and a design your client actually likes. Cheap migrators move database rows and leave the rest behind. What's really on offer today is a full rebuild.

The choice was never €20-and-a-weekend or nothing. It was a €2,000+ rebuild — or staying behind. Chogori is the option that didn't exist.
Three routes up

Compare the ways off Joomla 3

Route A — data migrators

Move the content, lose the site

€20 tools copy items and categories into core articles. Templates, overrides, K2 modules, galleries, extra-field layouts, and K2-based extensions don't come along. What loads afterwards is your data — in a broken site.

Cheap. And not actually a site.

Route B — the rebuild

Start over, pay full price

Rebuild in modern Joomla or WordPress: new template, re-implemented features, weeks of work per site. Agencies quote €2,000–5,000, and small-site owners simply say no — then stay on Joomla 3 for another year.

Thorough. Rarely affordable.

Route C — Chogori

Same site, new mountain

Chogori upgrades the site in place and keeps the K2 layer running natively on Joomla 6. Content, design, structure, and URLs are preserved. A day of work instead of a month; a fraction of the rebuild price.

The route that didn't exist.

How it works

Three camps to the summit

Camp 1 · Pre-flight

Scan the site

Chogori's pre-flight scan inventories your Joomla 3 site: K2 version, template and overrides, modules, plugins, K2-based extensions, PHP level. You get a readiness report before anything is touched — what upgrades cleanly, and what needs attention.

Camp 2 · Ascent

Upgrade in place

The guided upgrade takes the site through Joomla 4.4 and 5 to Joomla 6, installing the Chogori runtime that keeps the K2 layer working natively — items, categories, extra fields, media, tags, users, and the template override system.

Camp 3 · Summit

Run supported

Your site runs on a supported stack again. Chogori ships ongoing updates for new Joomla 6.x releases and PHP versions through Joomla's standard update system, with your download key — and real humans answering support.

An honest note on templates: Chogori preserves the K2 layer completely. The Joomla template itself is separate — Joomla-3-era template frameworks don't run on Joomla 6, so most sites pair Chogori with a J6-ready version of their template or a light template refresh. The pre-flight scan tells you exactly which case your site is before you commit. No surprises half-way up.

What's preserved

Everything that makes it your site

Items & categoriesFull content tree with ordering and publishing state
Extra fields & groupsDefinitions, values, and their front-end output
Image galleries & mediaItem images, galleries, and attachments in place
Template overridesYour K2 sub-templates and custom layouts keep working
K2 modules & pluginsLatest items, content modules, and K2 plugin output
Tags, comments & authorsTag structure, comment history, author pages
URLs & SEOSame routes, same rankings — no redirect graveyard
Users & permissionsAccounts, groups, and access levels carried over
For agencies

Your J3 backlog is revenue standing still

If you maintain K2 sites, you've done this math: rebuilding them at agency rates is work your clients won't buy, so the backlog sits — unbillable, insecure, and one PHP bump from an emergency.

Chogori turns that backlog into a productized service. Sell each client an affordable "upgrade to Joomla 6" engagement, run Chogori plus a day of QA and template work, and keep the margin. One license, all your sites.

We know, because we are you. Chogori is built by an Athens web agency with 100+ K2 client sites of its own — and we're upgrading ours with it first. Case studies from that portfolio are published as they complete.

Questions

Asked before every ascent

Why keep the K2 layer instead of migrating to core articles?

Because your site is more than rows in a database. Migrating to core articles means giving up K2's extra-field layouts, galleries, sub-templates, modules, and any extension built on K2's data — in practice, a rebuild. If your site barely uses those features, a migrator may genuinely be enough. If it's a real K2 site, Chogori keeps it whole.

Will my template work on Joomla 6?

The honest answer: the K2 layer, yes — that's Chogori's job. The Joomla template is separate: Joomla-3-era frameworks (Gantry 4/5, T3, and similar) don't run on Joomla 6. Many templates have J6-ready successors; others need a light rebuild while your K2 content and layouts stay untouched. The pre-flight scan tells you which case you're in before you spend a euro.

Isn't there a free K2 fork on GitHub?

There are community efforts, and we respect them. But none has shipped a stable release, an update server, or anyone accountable when a client's production site breaks at 6pm. Chogori exists because agencies bet client sites only on software with releases, updates, and support behind it.

Is this legal? What's your relationship with K2's makers?

Fully. K2 is open-source software under the GPL, which exists precisely so the community can carry code forward — the same way Joomla itself began. Chogori is an independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by JoomlaWorks; "K2" is their trademark, and Chogori is our own name and codebase carrying that legacy onto modern Joomla. We built on excellent work, and we say so.

Which versions are supported?

Chogori upgrades sites from Joomla 3.10 + K2 2.x and targets Joomla 6.x (with 4.4 and 5.x as supported waypoints), on PHP 8.1–8.4. New Joomla and PHP releases are covered by your update subscription.

I have dozens of these sites. Where do I start?

Start with the Agency license and bulk pre-flight scans: point Chogori at your portfolio, get a readiness report per site, and sequence the easy wins first. That's exactly how we're working through our own hundred-plus.

A high mountain range above the clouds
Why "Chogori"

The mountain's real name

Before surveyors labeled it "K2", the mountain already had a name: Chogori — the local Balti name for the second-highest peak on Earth. Same mountain. True name.

That's the spirit of this project. K2 the extension is a landmark of the Joomla world — millions of downloads, thousands of sites that outlived every trend. Chogori doesn't replace that legacy; it carries it up to modern Joomla, so the sites built on it get a future, not a museum.

Built with respect for K2 and its creators at JoomlaWorks, whose work shaped a decade of Joomla sites — including ours.
